Cyprus Airport Evacuated

Cyprus's Paphos Airport has been evacuated following a drone attack on a British military base.

Paphos International Airport in Cyprus was evacuated as a precaution after a drone strike hit the British Royal Air Force's Akrotiri base. This early Monday morning attack, reported by Reuters, involved an Iranian-made Shahed drone which caused limited damage to the runway but fortunately resulted in no injuries. Authorities from both Cyprus and Britain confirmed this incident, underlining a tense atmosphere at the base throughout the day. As a response, two other unmanned aerial vehicles heading towards the base were intercepted and neutralized.

Eyewitness accounts reported alarm sirens sounding at the base as military aircraft were seen taking off after the attack. In the wake of the incident, Easyjet announced the cancellation of all flights between the UK and the holiday island, highlighting the disruption caused by the attack. The Cypriot government is on high alert as it reassesses security protocols at airports and military installations.

President Nikos Christodoulidis emphasized that Cyprus will not engage in military operations in reaction to the escalating tensions, reinforcing the country's stance of non-involvement. This statement reflects a careful diplomatic balancing act by Cyprus amidst growing regional instability, ensuring that while they prioritize safety, they avoid being drawn into broader conflicts.
