Reijo Raekallio has died
Finnish visual artist Reijo Raekallio has passed away at the age of 75 in Kittilä due to health complications.
Reijo Raekallio, a renowned visual artist from Lapland, has died at the age of 75 at his home in Kittilä on March 1. He had been under palliative care for lung cancer and brain tumors. His wife, Maria Grandell, mentioned that despite knowing about his condition for more than two years, his sudden passing during lunch came as a shock. They had just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary the previous week.
Grandell recalls that even in his final days, Raekallio was actively engaged in his artwork, delivering a painting to a client just days before his death. He embodied a positive spirit, famously remarking that "melancholy is a sin." Over his 50-year career, he focused on human and animal subjects, often featuring reindeer, and was particularly praised for his use of color in watercolor paintings. Raekallio had a home gallery in the village of Pötsö in Kittilä, where he was known for his vibrant and dynamic representations of life.
With over 3,000 paintings sold throughout his career, Raekallio's artistic legacy is significant in Finnish culture, particularly in Lapland where his works resonated with the natural beauty and wildlife of the region. The news of his passing has prompted reflections on his contribution to the arts and the impact he had on the local community, as well as the art world more broadly. His talent and dedication are remembered fondly by those who knew him and appreciated his work.
