Cyprus raises alert, evacuates Paphos airport and mass departure of aircraft
Cyprus has raised its alert level and evacuated Paphos airport due to threats related to drones, coinciding with increasing regional tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
On Monday, Paphos International Airport in Cyprus underwent evacuation and heightened security measures after threats associated with drones were detected. This urgent response reflects the growing security concerns in the region amid escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Flight data from the 'FlightRadar' platform indicated that seven commercial aircraft left the airport in a short period, indicating rapid action to clear the surrounding airspace and reduce air traffic as a precaution. Although some flights were redirected and departure times adjusted, there was not a complete suspension of aviation operations announced by the authorities.
The decision to evacuate was confirmed by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation after radar systems detected a suspicious aerial object moving in close proximity to the airport. Emergency protocols were activated, with the passenger terminal being temporarily cleared to ensure the safety of travelers and airport staff. The incident led to footage showing numerous passengers gathering outside the airport terminal and police presence ensuring security during the evacuation process.
