Kazakhstan Rewards Olympic Gold Medals Royally
Kazakh figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov received generous rewards after winning his country's second Olympic gold medal, including an apartment and new vehicles.
In February 2026, Kazakh figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov made headlines by becoming the Olympic champion, securing the second gold medal in the history of Kazakhstan at the Winter Games. The 21-year-old athlete surprised everyone by winning the men's figure skating competition in Milan, despite not being expected to even medal. This victory marked a significant achievement for Kazakhstan, as it brought the total number of medals the country has won at the Winter Olympic Games to nine, with two in figure skating alone.
To celebrate his historic achievement, a grand welcoming ceremony was held at the Astana International Airport on February 25, where Shaidorov was awarded a three-room apartment in the capital of Kazakhstan. Not only did he receive this generous gift, but fellow figure skater Sofia Samodelkina and their coaches were also recognized and rewarded with new apartments. Reports indicate that prior to this public ceremony, one Kazakh company had promised Shaidorov an apartment in Astana, and another offered him a residence in Almaty, where he grew up.
In addition to the apartment, Shaidorov was gifted several new vehicles as part of his reward for the Olympics win. This outpouring of support demonstrates the pride Kazakhstan holds in its athletes and their accomplishments on the international stage, particularly in winter sports, which have historically received less attention and support than summer sports in the nation.
