Apartments and a luxury car: Kazakhstan spares no expense for Olympic hero

Kazakh figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov received multiple apartments, a car, and awards from the state following his unexpected victory at the Olympics in Milan.

Mikhail Shaidorov, a Kazakh figure skater, was celebrated upon his return from the Milan Olympics where he achieved a surprising victory. He was awarded three apartments—a three-room apartment from the national skating federation, another three-room apartment from a sponsor, and an additional two-room apartment from another benefactor. His trainer, Alexei Urmanov, also received a three-room apartment, signifying the commitment of the Kazakh authorities to reward significant sporting achievements.

The story of the Shaidorov family resonates deeply in Kazakhstan, as it highlights the sacrifices made for athletic success. Shaidorov's father had once sold his car to fund his son's training, but following his son's success at the Olympics, local entrepreneurs generously rewarded the young athlete. He was gifted an Audi Q8, which allows him to repay his father's sacrifices. Additionally, popular singer Dimash Kudaibergen publicly congratulated him and promised to gift him another vehicle, further showcasing the community's pride and support for their sporting heroes.

The state also recognized Shaidorov's achievements with a financial incentive and an official honor bestowed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. This not only emphasizes the importance of sports in Kazakhstan but also serves to inspire future athletes. Shaidorov's victory came as he capitalized on a misstep by the American frontrunner Ilia Malinin, suggesting that the Olympic Games are as much about seizing opportunities as they are about preparation and skill.
