A collaborative Polish-Finnish film titled 'The Seal Mother' features the Saimaa ringed seal and received funding from the city of Savonlinna to promote local visibility.
Filming for the collaborative Polish-Finnish production titled 'The Seal Mother,' scheduled for release in 2027, took place in Savonlinna at the end of February. The film's plot follows 42-year-old Polish Kaja, who dreams of motherhood and seeks a new direction in her life by journeying to Finland, where she joins volunteers committed to protecting endangered Saimaa ringed seals. Notably, the film portrays themes such as the various forms of motherhood, the human relationship with nature, and environmental responsibility, as volunteers actively engage in assisting the seals like clearing snow for them.
The film includes Finnish actors, with Elias Salonen playing a supporting role; Salonen is recognized for his involvement in the recently released 'Kalevala: The Tale of Kullervo.' The involvement of real-life figures from Finnish culture and conservation efforts enhances the film's authenticity and connection to its setting. Savonlinna city has funded the film with €15,000, indicating a commitment to promoting local artists and generating visibility through this international project.
Marita Kajander, the city’s event manager, highlights that the collaboration with the production team is part of Savonlinna's strategic goals, which aim to leverage cultural productions for economic benefits, particularly for local hospitality services.
