Saimaa Ringed Seal Dies in Savonlinna – Fourth Death in Fishing Net This Year

A young Saimaa ringed seal was found dead in a fishing net in Savonlinna, marking the fourth such death in Finland this year.

A young male Saimaa ringed seal was discovered dead in a fishing net in Savonlinna, Finland, on February 27, making this the fourth reported death of a seal in fishing nets this year. The deceased seal, weighing 29 kilograms and measuring 93 centimeters in length, is believed to be a young individual or a pup from the previous spring. This alarming trend points to the ongoing dangers faced by this endangered species, particularly from fishing activities.

The fishing net where the seal was found is located in a restricted fishing area where net fishing is prohibited from mid-April to June. Despite this legal restriction, the type of net found was legal for fishing in the area it was located, highlighting the complex regulations surrounding fishing practices. This incident draws attention to the need for stricter enforcement of fishing regulations to protect vulnerable wildlife, especially as the Saimaa ringed seal population is currently estimated at only 530 individuals.

According to reports from Metsähallitus, eleven Saimaa ringed seals died in fishing nets in 2025, while an additional 21 pups were found dead in their dens last year. With approximately 100 pups born annually, many face mortality due to poor breeding conditions or fishing-related deaths during their first year. This continuing decline in population raises urgent concerns for conservation efforts and the future of the Saimaa ringed seal, an iconic species of Finland.
