Silvia Urgas and Fs have won this year's Tuglase Short Story Awards for their respective works.
On March 2nd, the Tuglase Short Story Awards were presented at the Under and Tuglase Literary Center, with Silvia Urgas winning for her novella "Eestimaa puit" and Fs for "Stefan." The jury, consisting of chair Piret Jaaks and members Kadri Kõusaar, Ülar Ploom, and Paul Raud, emphasized the distinctive qualities of both novellas, highlighting their fresh approaches to narrative structure and thematic depth. Urgas's novella was noted for its vibrant imagery, genre-expanding qualities, and a simultaneously humorous and socially critical portrayal of Estonian society. In contrast, Fs's "Stefan" was praised for its engrossing atmosphere and compelling exploration of themes such as love, youth, and the deception inherent in subcultures, marking it as a mature work despite being a debut in the novella genre for both authors. Established in 1971 by Friedebert Tuglase, the Tuglase Short Story Award is presented by the Estonian Writers' Union in collaboration with the Under and Tuglase Literary Institute of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. This award highlights the significance of short fiction in Estonia and recognizes emerging voices within the literary landscape.
