Fourth Saimaa Ringed Seal Died in Fishing Net

A fourth Saimaa ringed seal has died in a fishing net this year, according to Metsähallitus.

A Saimaa ringed seal died on Friday after becoming entangled in a fishing net in Pihlajavesi near Savonlinna, as reported by Metsähallitus. This incident marks the fourth seal death due to fishing nets this year alone. The deceased seal was identified as either a pup from the previous year or a young individual, weighing 29 kilograms and measuring 93 centimeters. The fishing net involved is a legal fishing device as defined by fishing regulations for this time of year, although there are fishing restrictions during the summer months, which prohibit net fishing from mid-April to the end of June.

The Saimaa ringed seal is a critically endangered species, with its population currently estimated to be around 530 seals. The deaths of these seals in fishing gears pose a significant threat to their survival as they are already facing various challenges, including habitat disturbances during breeding season, climate change affecting their breeding conditions, and other environmental changes. This continuous loss amplifies the urgency of conservation efforts and raises awareness about the human impact on this fragile species.

Conservation organizations and authorities are calling for more stringent measures to protect the Saimaa ringed seal population, especially considering the growing incidences of accidental deaths due to fishing gear. As fishing remains a legal activity in the region, balancing human interests with wildlife conservation becomes increasingly critical in safeguarding this threatened species.
