A 54-year-old foreign national was arrested at Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos Airport after attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of cigarettes into Greece. The arrest occurred on a Sunday afternoon, as police officers from the Airport Security Directorate identified the suspect based on information received. He had arrived on a flight from Cairo and was found at the arrivals level of the airport.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered that the suspect was carrying 1,165 packs of cigarettes, along with four packages of tobacco that lacked the necessary tax stamps. Additionally, he was in possession of €3,090 in cash. The severity of the violation indicates that he purposely attempted to bypass Greek customs regulations, which strictly control the importation of tobacco products due to tax implications and health regulations.
