Rio City Hall launches project for the construction of the new Uruguaiana Popular Market

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has initiated a project for a new Uruguaiana Popular Market, aiming to demolish the current market and build a modern commercial center.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has unveiled plans for the construction of a new Uruguaiana Popular Market, as announced on the first of the month. This project involves demolishing the existing market to create a new commercial center featuring approximately 1,600 stalls. The government's initiative aims at revitalizing one of the largest commercial areas in Rio de Janeiro, enhancing its infrastructure and commercial offerings significantly.

The project is expected to cost over 74 million Brazilian Reais and will be managed by the Municipal Urbanization Company, known as Rio-Urbe. Along with the new market building, there will be surrounding urban redevelopment, which includes the creation of a boulevard that connects Uruguaiana Street to President Vargas Avenue. These enhancements are expected to draw more visitors to the area and improve the overall shopping experience in this vibrant district.

The design of the new market includes a metallic structure with a ground floor and three mezzanine levels, and it will also feature a supermarket, terrace, and a roof. The City Hall has released projections and images showing how the area will transform after the completion of the proposed works, aiming to not only modernize the market but also to foster a lively commercial environment that will benefit local businesses and the community at large.
