The City transforms the oldest warehouse of the Riachuelo into a museum about port history

Buenos Aires is set to open a new museum this July, reclaiming the historical Barraca Peña to illuminate the port activities of the 19th century.

Mid-year, the city of Buenos Aires is expected to inaugurate a unique museum located along the Riachuelo River, where the oldest warehouse in the area once stood in the 19th century. The ongoing restoration efforts aim to convert the well-known Barraca Peña into an institution dedicated to uncovering the rich history of port activities that flourished two centuries ago. This initiative not only preserves local heritage but also educates the public about the significance of the maritime commerce that thrived in the region.

The Barraca Peña, which dates back to 1774, is situated at 3003 Pedro de Mendoza Avenue and was named after its founder, the Galician merchant Francisco de la Peña Fernández. Being recognized as the most important archaeological site in the southern area of Buenos Aires, the future museum will showcase the vigorous port activities that characterized La Boca during the 19th century. Authorities have announced that the museum will officially open in July, allowing visitors to explore the pivotal role this location played in the development of the city’s economy.

The restoration process is being carried out in stages, with completion scheduled for July. Once the works are finalized, the museum will welcome anyone interested in discovering the historical significance of the area's past and its evolution over the centuries. This project represents a broader commitment by the city to revive and honor its cultural and historical legacy, making it accessible to both locals and tourists alike.
