Preveza: The archaeological site of Kassope is upgraded
The Greek Ministry of Culture is enhancing the archaeological site of Kassope in Preveza, focusing on improving accessibility and infrastructure for visitors.
The Greek Ministry of Culture, as part of its strategy for equal access to cultural heritage, is working on improvements at the archaeological site of Kassope. This project involves upgrading infrastructure for better accessibility and includes specific interventions at the ancient theater. The plan is also part of a wider initiative funded by the Epirus Regional Operational Program "Epirus" – ESIF for 2014-2020 and 2021-2027, aimed at enhancing historical sites throughout the Epirus region, embracing both mountainous areas and coastal routes.
Kassope, founded in the 4th century BC, is strategically situated on a small plateau on the western slopes of Zalongo at an altitude of about 550 meters, allowing its ancient inhabitants to survey the surrounding region effectively. The location's natural fortifications contributed to its historical significance, and the upgrades planned are set to enhance both the site's appeal and its educational potential for visitors.
The Culture Minister emphasized that the improvements at Kassope are essential not only for preserving Greece's rich heritage but also for making it accessible to all. This initiative reflects a broader acknowledgment of the importance of cultural sites and the necessity of attracting visitors, raising awareness of Greece's archaeological treasures, and fostering regional tourism, all of which are vital for local economies.
