The Archaeological Museum of Ithaca is Fully Upgraded

The Greek Ministry of Culture is modernizing the Archaeological Museum in Vathi, Ithaca, as a vital step for its reopening.

The Ministry of Culture in Greece is undertaking significant upgrading and modernization efforts for the Archaeological Museum located in Vathi, Ithaca, with the goal of reopening it to the public. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance museum infrastructure across the island, which includes restoring frescoes in post-Byzantine churches such as the ones in the villages of Perachori and Exogi. The overall investment in this project exceeds 450,000 euros, reflecting the government's commitment to preserving cultural heritage in the region.

The project will be executed by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cephalonia and Ithaca and is funded through national resources from the Ministry of Culture, along with support from the Regional Operational Program "Ionian Islands - ESPA 2014-2020 and 2021-2027". This financial backing is crucial for carrying out the much-needed renovations and introducing improved accessibility for visitors.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni highlighted the necessity of these works following a site visit, emphasizing that the museum’s building upgrade and collection re-exhibition are essential for its operational renewal. The revitalization of the museum not only aims to enhance visitor experience but also plays a significant role in local tourism and cultural education, aiming to attract more visitors to Ithaca as a historical destination.
