Everything you need to know as '£745 leaves Nationwide accounts'
Nationwide Building Society has expressed concern over rising gambling expenditure among customers, with an average of £745 being spent monthly by top gamblers.
Nationwide Building Society has recently reported a 9% increase in gambling spending among its customers in January compared to the previous year, raising alarms about potential gambling problems as major sporting events are on the calendar. The data shows that the average top spender gambles around £745 per month, highlighting a worrying trend in financial behavior. In response to this uptick, Nationwide is proactively working to raise awareness about gambling addiction and the resources available to help customers safeguard their finances.
To further underscore the problem, a survey conducted with 2,000 gamblers revealed that two-thirds expect to increase their betting in 2026, largely fueled by anticipated major sporting events. While the excitement around these events can prompt increased gambling activity, nearly 20% of those surveyed were unaware of the banking options available to block gambling transactions. This lack of knowledge underscores a vital area where financial institutions can enhance their support for customers who may struggle with gambling addiction.
Kathryn Townsend, head of customer vulnerability at Nationwide, has emphasized the importance of these findings, warning that the upcoming sports calendar could lead to individuals overspending and engaging in gambling behaviors that could be financially damaging. It positions Nationwide not only as a banking provider but also as a concerned entity helping to promote responsible gambling practices among its customers, especially in a year where sports events may amplify these issues.
