Childcare: Regional Lunch for Oberhaching's Children
The municipality of Oberhaching is changing its catering provider for children’s lunch in response to parents' demand for more regional food options.
The municipality of Oberhaching has decided to switch catering providers for children's lunches in their daycare centers, following a survey in which 80% of participating parents expressed support for this change. Notably, the survey revealed that parents prioritize the regional origin of food, while price is less of a concern for many. One facility, the "Villa Kunterbunt," is excluded from this change as it recently changed its provider.
In light of the survey results, the community will consult with parent councils on the next steps, which will involve discussions with potential catering providers and trial meals. The aim is to implement the new catering service at the start of the new daycare year. The municipality reportedly provides around 173,000 meals each year in its daycare centers, highlighting the significance of this decision for the community's children and their nutrition.
The decision comes after ongoing criticism regarding the quality of meals in municipal institutions. Parents had previously started a petition voicing their concerns, indicating a strong desire among families for improvements in the food served to their children. This shift towards prioritizing regional food sources reflects broader trends in community engagement and the increasing demand for local and sustainable food options in education settings.
