Hungry in the Classroom: Frankfurt Plans Breakfast in All Elementary Schools
Frankfurt plans to provide free, healthy breakfasts in all kindergartens and elementary schools due to a decrease in parents sending packed lunches.
The city of Frankfurt is set to implement a program providing free and healthy breakfasts in all kindergartens and elementary schools, addressing the growing trend of children arriving at school without breakfast. This initiative arose from a coalition agreement among the city’s political parties, including SPD, the Greens, Volt, and Die Linke, focusing on improving child well-being and nutrition. While many kindergartens already offer breakfast, this will be a new practice for the majority of the 81 municipal elementary schools.
In collaboration with local organizations, such as Brotzeit, which has been supplying schools with breakfast through donations, the city aims to combat food insecurity among students. Currently, about one in five children in Germany goes to school without having eaten breakfast, highlighting the need for such programs. The initiative is both a logistical challenge for the municipality and a necessary step towards advocating for children's health and educational outcomes.
This program not only provides essential nutrition for children but also promotes an equitable learning environment where all students, regardless of their home situation, can start their day prepared and focused. By addressing hunger in schools, Frankfurt is tackling a significant barrier to learning and fostering a healthier generation of students.
