The Akmenė LEZ starts electricity production with a 29.5 MW wind farm

A unique wind farm in Lithuania's Akmenė Free Economic Zone will exclusively supply green energy to local industrial enterprises.

The newly inaugurated 29.5 MW wind farm in Akmenė Free Economic Zone marks a significant advancement in Lithuania's commitment to green energy. This facility is notable for being the only one in the country designed to cater specifically to the energy needs of industries operating within the LEZ, which means that all generated electricity will be directed solely to these local businesses rather than being distributed to the public grid. According to Lina Mockutė, the head of Akmenė LEZ and the company Akmenė bona, this dedicated supply aims to bolster the industrial activities occurring within the zone.

The wind farm consists of five individual turbines, each capable of generating 5.9 MW, with an anticipated annual production of around 103,000 MWh. The project, which has a total value of €65 million, is financed through various means, including a substantial loan from the national development bank ILTE amounting to €44.25 million, along with investments from the investment fund Sustainable Energy Fund I, established by the company Braitin, which contributed €12.7 million. Additional funding has been provided by other shareholders of Akmenė bona, ensuring the project has a multifaceted support structure.

As Lithuania seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and transition to renewable energy sources, the establishment of such projects in economic zones with dedicated infrastructure represents a forward-looking approach. This initiative not only supports local industries but also positions Lithuania as a growing player in the renewable energy sector, with potential implications for future investments and technological advancements in energy production.
