Don't Rush to Change Winter Tires to Summer Tires

The CSDD urges caution in changing winter tires to summer tires as vehicle inspections show many still do not meet safety requirements.

The Road Traffic Safety Directorate of Latvia (CSDD) has reported results from their recent inspections, conducted in collaboration with the State Police, revealing critical safety issues regarding vehicle winter tire compliance. During the winter season, a total of 8,216 vehicles were inspected, with an alarming 195 vehicles receiving a second evaluation grade, marking their technical inspection as void until necessary deficiencies are rectified within one month. Out of these vehicles, 54 had tires so worn that they posed significant dangers on the roads, leading to their registration plates being removed and the cars requiring towing to continue in operation.

Additionally, the CSDD shared concerning statistics highlighting that 627 vehicles, or 8% of those inspected, demonstrated the minimum tire tread depth required for winter driving. For vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kg, the legal minimum tread depth is set at 4 mm. Although the change to summer tires is permitted starting March 2nd, the CSDD recommends that drivers should not rush to make the switch, stressing the importance of proper tire safety for ongoing winter conditions that may still persist in Latvia.

The message from the CSDD reflects broader concerns about road safety, particularly as seasonal transitions frequently lead to accidents caused by inadequate vehicle maintenance. With winter conditions still affecting Latvia, it is imperative that vehicle owners remain vigilant, ensuring their vehicles are equipped with tires that adhere to safety standards to protect not just themselves, but all road users during this transitional period.
