First migration of birds observed in Latvia
As temperatures rise, various migratory birds are returning to Latvia, with reports of cranes, lapwings, and starlings already noted.
With the increase in air temperatures, Latvia is witnessing the return of various migratory bird species, according to observations recorded on the platform "Dabasdati.lv". Last week, specifically on February 26, the first cranes were spotted in Nīca and the Jelgava region, marking an early sign of the seasonal change. This period typically heralds the arrival of spring in Latvia, which is signified by the presence of migrating birds.
Moreover, late February and early March have seen the sighting and hearing of lapwings in the country, known to be consistent harbingers of spring in Latvia. Additionally, other returning species include a variety of geese, swans, and ducks, indicating a broader pattern of seasonal migration that impacts local ecosystems and agriculture. The return of these birds is not only a natural phenomenon but also a reflection of changing climate patterns that influence wildlife behavior.
One particularly interesting observation includes the sighting of a white stork in Iecava on February 19, which adds to the excitement of the returning migratory species. Furthermore, local farmer “Ragāres” has reported that maple sap has started to flow, another sign of the changing seasons that farmers eagerly await. Together, these returnees symbolize the transition from winter to spring, with implications for both biodiversity and agricultural practices across Latvia.
