Spring Harbingers Return to Klaipėda - Lapwings

The first lapwings, known as harbingers of spring, have been spotted returning to Klaipėda, as confirmed by local wildlife experts.

The arrival of lapwings in Klaipėda is celebrated by local wildlife enthusiasts, marking the beginning of spring in Lithuania. Saulius Karalius, head of the Marine Nature Department at the Lithuanian Sea Museum, was among the first to report seeing four flocks of lapwings, totaling around 120 birds, flying over Kopgalis. He shared this exciting news on social media, expressing joy for the onset of spring.

Remigijus Dailidė, the museum's chief biologist, corroborated these sightings, noting that the return of the lapwings is a significant indicator of the changing seasons. These birds typically arrive depending on temperature conditions, and while Lithuania is still experiencing cold weather, neighboring Poland is already reporting positive temperatures, which greatly affects the migration patterns of these birds.

Weather forecasts suggest that warmer conditions will prevail in the coming days, with stable positive temperatures expected. This forecast has contributed to a hopeful spring atmosphere, encouraging the lapwings to commence their migratory journeys. Their early arrival is a reminder of nature's rhythms and the transition from winter to spring, providing opportunities for nature enthusiasts to witness this seasonal change firsthand.
