The Kumu Documentary series launches its spring season with a film exploring the life of legendary ski jumper Matti Nykänen.
Kumu Documentary, a cultural documentary series in Estonia, is kicking off its spring season with a film about Matti Nykänen, regarded as one of the greatest ski jumpers of all time. The documentary titled 'Legend Matti Nykänen' delves into the life of this iconic athlete, exploring the person behind the legend and questioning whether his downward spiral in life could have been avoided. This film debuted last year in the sports film program at the Pimedate Ööde film festival in Finland, which had sparked diverse opinions in the country regarding its content. The screening is set for March 4th at 6 PM at the Kumu auditorium, where Olli Laine, the film's creator who viewed Nykänen as his childhood hero, will present the film. During the event, Laurine Tiisler, a sports commentator, will interview Laine, promoting the film as a compelling narrative about a 'good guy' who struggles with his own challenges. In addition, the series program for the spring season includes a total of 11 films, highlighting various aspects of culture and art. The portrayal of Nykänen in the documentary serves as a reflection on the complexities of fame and personal struggles, resonating with audiences who appreciate not just sports narratives but also human stories underlying the public personas. The film invites viewers to reflect on broader themes about fame, personal demons, and the quest for redemption, bridging sports with universal human experiences.
