Targeting Riyadh, Doha, Dubai, and Kuwait with misleading videos

Claims of Iranian attacks on Gulf capitals have been circulated through old videos, misleading the public amid rising tensions in the region.

With every military escalation in the region, the digital space sees heightened activity alongside missile movements. Recently, social media has been flooded with videos purportedly showing Iranian strikes on Riyadh, Jeddah, Doha, Dubai, and Kuwait, creating an alarming narrative of synchronized attacks on Gulf capitals. However, fact-checking by Al Jazeera's open-source unit has revealed a completely different picture. The circulating materials are largely old clips recycled or taken from other countries, misrepresented as current events in the context of ongoing conflict.

One of the most viral clips originally claimed to document explosions in Jeddah and damage to an Aramco facility, quickly amassing over a million views. However, reverse image searches traced this video back to March 2022, when Houthi attacks on oil facilities in Jeddah occurred. The footage was republished out of its original context, misleading viewers into believing that a new attack took place.

In another instance, further misrepresented clips were shown to induce panic regarding security in the Gulf region, emphasizing the importance of verifying such claims during times of heightened geopolitical tensions. These incident underlines the growing threat of misinformation, shedding light on the need for critical media literacy and source verification in the online environment to counteract misleading narratives that can exacerbate regional instability.
