South Korean seafarer Lee Tae-Young received the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for rescuing 12 crew members during the sinking of the fishing vessel Geum Seong No. 135.

Lee Tae-Young, a South Korean seafarer, was honored with the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea in 2025 for his heroic actions during the sinking of the fishing vessel Geum Seong No. 135 off the coast of Jeju Island in November 2024. During this maritime crisis, Lee demonstrated remarkable courage and composure under difficult conditions by successfully helping 12 crew members board lifeboats to safety. His actions not only showcased his bravery but also highlighted the importance of preparedness and safety training on fishing vessels.

The award, presented by Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, took place in London, although Lee was absent from the official ceremony in December 2025 due to health issues. Dominguez praised Lee's heroism and leadership, expressing gratitude for his selfless actions which significantly contributed to saving lives during the emergency.

This recognition fosters awareness about maritime safety and the critical need for effective training for seafarers. Lee's exemplary conduct serves as an inspiration for others in the industry and reinforces the importance of safety protocols to prevent accidents at sea. As fishing vessels can often face dangerous conditions, such recognition of courage and leadership is vital for promoting a culture of safety in maritime operations.
