“Searching for Future Talents in the Fishing Industry”… The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Supports Young Entrepreneurs with Scholarships
The South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is recruiting 30 scholarship recipients for young entrepreneurial fishers as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance youth involvement in the fishing industry.
The South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has announced the recruitment of 30 scholarship recipients for the upcoming first semester of 2026, aimed at young entrepreneurs in the fishing sector. This initiative is designed to support university students in fisheries-related fields, enabling them to thrive in the fishing industry and rural fishing communities post-graduation. The government began this scholarship program, known as the 'Young Entrepreneur Fisherman Scholarship,' in 2024 and has expanded the number of scholars from 20 to 60 annually to attract more young talent into the sector.
Eligible candidates include students aged 20 to 40 enrolled in one of six fisheries universities or 61 fisheries-related departments, who have completed at least 12 credits in the previous semester while maintaining a percentile score of 70 or higher. The selection process involves student applications, university recommendations, document screening by the foundation, and insurance registration, with further details available on the Rural Development Administration's website. Successful applicants will receive a scholarship of approximately 4.1 million won, covering full tuition and an additional 2 million won in academic support, as well as practical training in fishing operations throughout their semester.
The Ministry emphasizes that this scholarship is vital in cultivating young talents who will lead the fishing industry into the future. Recipients are obligated to work or start a business in the fisheries sector for a set period post-graduation, which could last for up to 42 months, depending on the duration of their scholarship support. This initiative not only aims to foster interest in the fishing industry among youth but also to ensure that they actively participate and contribute to the vitality of rural fishing areas, reinforcing the Ministry's commitment to ongoing policy efforts in nurturing future talent in the sector.
