The Illusion of the Blue Lane for Motorcycles

The introduction of blue lanes for motorcycles in São Paulo has led to decreased lateral collisions but an increase in accidents and higher average speeds, raising safety concerns.

The city of São Paulo introduced blue lanes painted on the asphalt with the intent to create designated areas for motorcycles, thereby reducing direct competition for road space with cars. Initial studies conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in collaboration with Vital Strategies indicated a decrease in lateral collisions, which highlighted the potential benefits of organizing traffic for motorcycles. However, these positive findings have been overshadowed by alarming statistics that reveal an increase in fatalities at intersections and an alarming rise in the average speed of motorcycles, reaching up to 72 km/h within the blue corridor.
