Park Ji-won: Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae Must Bear Responsibility and Resign

South Korean lawmaker Park Ji-won demands the resignation of Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae in light of recent controversies surrounding judicial reforms.

On February 2nd, Park Ji-won, a member of the National Assembly's Legislative Judiciary Committee from the Democratic Party, publicly called for the resignation of Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae during an appearance on MBC radio. Park's remarks came shortly after the resignation of Park Young-jae, the head of the Supreme Court's Administrative Office, which was perceived as a protest against the proposed 'three judicial reform laws' aimed at reforming the judiciary. Park argues that not only should Park Young-jae resign, but that Cho Hee-dae also needs to take full responsibility for the unfolding judicial crisis and step down from his position.

In his statements, Park highlighted that the departure of the Administrative Office Chief was not merely a reaction to the judicial reforms but part of a larger accountability that involved Cho. He accused Cho of intentionally provoking the opposition and causing discord among the public by appointing individuals to contentious positions within the judiciary, suggesting that this had undermined public trust in the courts. Park emphasized that Cho's leadership had been detrimental to the judicial process, which he claims has been marred by bias and negligence.

Despite calling for Cho's resignation, Park Ji-won reframed from discussing the possibility of impeachment against the Chief Justice. He noted that there are ongoing discussions among some lawmakers within the Democratic Party regarding impeachment but clarified that no formal decisions or actions have been taken yet. The controversy highlights continuing tensions within South Korea's judiciary and legislative bodies regarding necessary reforms and accountability within the justice system.
