Casualties from Iraqi Militias in Airstrikes and Attacks Targeting American Bases
Airstrikes attributed to US and Israeli forces have killed several members of Iraqi militias near the Syria-Iraq border, leading to increased tensions in the region.
On Sunday evening, sources from the Iraqi 'Hezbollah' brigades reported that two members were killed in US-Israeli strikes on a site near al-Qaim, close to the Syrian border. This incident followed the announcement by the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) that four of its fighters were killed in a separate airstrike in Diyala province, which was also attributed to US and Israeli military actions. The escalating violence indicates a pattern of targeted strikes on militia positions, reflecting ongoing regional tensions involving US forces.
In response to these airstrikes, the so-called 'Islamic Resistance Brigades in Iraq' claimed responsibility for carrying out 23 operations involving dozens of drones targeting US bases in Iraq and the wider region. This marks a significant escalation in the conflict, with reports of drone strikes targeting military facilities and warehouses belonging to the PMF, which is backed by Iran, particularly in areas like Muqdadiyah in Diyala province. Such incidents underline the precarious security situation in Iraq, where militia groups are increasingly asserting their operational capabilities.
Additionally, Iranian media has reported missile and drone attacks on a US military base in Erbil, Iraq's Kurdistan region, indicating a broader operational landscape in which these militias are capable of striking at various points across the country. The tensions and retaliatory actions from both US forces and Iranian-backed militias suggest a deepening of hostilities, further complicating the regional security environment and posing risks for US interests in Iraq.
