Rain causes flooding and damage in Aracaju
Heavy rainfall of 34 mm in six hours has led to flooding and damage in various areas of Aracaju, affecting local families and businesses.
On the evening of Saturday (28), Aracaju experienced significant rainfall, with the total reaching 34 mm over six hours. This rainfall triggered widespread flooding in the southern areas of the city, leading to various damages impacting both residents and local businesses. The Civil Defense of Aracaju reported that they provided assistance to four families, totaling 17 individuals, who were affected by the flooding during the heavy downpour.
The city’s social assistance offices were activated to support those who suffered damage to their homes. Affected families residing in neighborhoods such as 17 de Março, Olaria, and Veneza received aid in the form of mattresses and cleaning kits to help them cope with the aftermath of the flooding. The action reflects the city's effort to provide immediate relief to its residents in times of natural disasters, ensuring that those in need receive essential support.
Valéria Bispo, coordinator of Aracaju's Civil Defense, indicated that one of the severely impacted areas was the Bairro 17 de Março. There, substantial debris and waste left on the streets had obstructed drainage systems, exacerbating the flooding situation. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of urban waste management and the importance of proper waste disposal, as improper practices contribute to infrastructure failures during adverse weather events.
