Escalating Attacks: Second Oil Tanker Hits Near Strait of Hormuz
A second oil tanker, MKD VYOM, has sustained damage during attacks in the Gulf of Oman, marking a significant escalation in tensions near the Strait of Hormuz.
The oil tanker MKD VYOM has been reported to be damaged following an attack in the Gulf of Oman, making it the second vessel to be targeted on the same day. According to Reuters, the tanker was registered under the Marshall Islands and was last spotted about two hours ago. It had departed from Imoiden port in Germany on February 8, 2026, and was scheduled to arrive at Ras Tanura port in Saudi Arabia on March 3, 2026. However, the latest information regarding the status of the tanker remains unclear post-attack.
Prior to this incident, a different attack was confirmed by Iranian media, which targeted the oil tanker SKYLIGHT. This attack occurred two nautical miles north of the Kamzar region in Oman and resulted in injuries to four members of the crew, with reports indicating that the tanker caught fire and possibly sank. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has asserted their position regarding shipping routes, indicating a potentially heightened military stance in the region.
These escalating attacks on oil tankers underscore growing tensions in a strategically crucial area for global oil shipping. Both incidents highlight the ongoing vulnerability of maritime transport in the region, especially as geopolitical tensions between Iran and other countries continue to simmer. The international community may be forced to respond to the increasing frequency of such incidents, as they pose significant risks to energy security and regional stability.
