Outrage in PAK Following Khamenei's Death; Crowd Sets Fire to UN Building After Attacking US Embassy

Hundreds of protesters in Skardu, Pakistan, expressed solidarity with Iran after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, resulting in violent protests and arson at a UN building.

In Skardu, a city located in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan, hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets to express solidarity with Iran following the reported death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The protesters decried aggressive US policies and chanted slogans in resistance. In a dramatic escalation, some of the demonstrators set fire to a United Nations office associated with the region, prompting increased security measures to maintain order. Skardu is known for its predominantly Shia population and scenic Himalayan peaks, making it a significant location for local pride and tourism.

Spokesperson Shabbir Mir provided insights to Reuters, confirming that a large number of protesters had gathered outside the UN office and that the building had been burned down during the clashes. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties amidst the violent demonstrations. Earlier in the day, protests had also erupted in Karachi, Pakistan's bustling port city, following news of Khamenei's death due to an Israeli and American attack, indicating a substantial emotional response among the populace in various parts of the country.

The violent backlash in both Skardu and Karachi underscores the tension in Pakistan regarding foreign intervention in the region, particularly perceived threats from Israel and the United States. It reflects the intricate relationship between Iran and Pakistan, especially concerning Shia communities in Pakistan that have deep ties to the Iranian leadership. The government’s response to these protests will likely be scrutinized as it navigates internal dissent while managing its geopolitical relations with neighboring countries.
