Pakistan: Protests from Karachi to Islamabad after Khamenei's death, 23 dead

After the reported death of Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, caused by an Israeli-American attack, citizens in various cities in Pakistan took to the streets in large protests. In Karachi, Shia organizations engaged in vandalism and arson near the US consulate, which prompted intervention by the US military who opened fire, leading to several deaths among the protestors. The number of those killed in these violent clashes reached 10 in Karachi alone.

Protesters gathered in significant numbers, marching from Sultanabad towards the consulate, which led police to use tear gas to control the crowd that retaliated with stones. The unrest was not confined to Karachi alone; cities including Skardu and Lahore also witnessed demonstrations against the US and Israel regarding Khamenei's death. In Skardu, protestors set fire to an American office, resulting in 11 fatalities, while two deaths were reported in Islamabad as clashes continued.

In response to the violence, authorities in Karachi increased security in sensitive areas, deploying additional police forces across the city. Key roads including MT Khan Road and Mai Kolachi Road were completely closed off, and traffic police took steps to manage the chaotic situation during these unrest episodes, reflecting a tense atmosphere in the wake of dire news from the region.
