Ogun CJ urges collaboration, adoption of technology to tackle sexual violence cases
The Chief Judge of Ogun State has called for collaboration and the adoption of technology to better address sexual violence cases in Nigeria.
Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, the Chief Judge of Ogun State, emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration among key stakeholders in the legal and justice sectors to tackle the pressing issue of sexual violence in Nigeria. She pointed out the importance of involving police, lawyers, judges, governmental agencies, and non-profit organizations in a unified approach to combat this societal challenge effectively. The Chief Judge advocates that such cooperation is essential for ensuring justice and support for victims.
In her remarks delivered during a recent stakeholders' gathering in Abeokuta, Dipeolu highlighted the pivotal role the judiciary plays in the fight against sexual violence, asserting that courts must transform into safe havens for survivors seeking justice. The focus is on implementing measures that hold offenders accountable while also ensuring that survivors are treated with dignity and respect in legal processes. Dipeolu's advocacy entails a comprehensive approach that combines legal reforms with practical support mechanisms for victims.
Further, Justice Dipeolu proposed the utilization of technology in court proceedings, particularly for the benefit of vulnerable witnesses like children and traumatized survivors. The integration of video link facilities allows these witnesses to testify from separate locations without facing their alleged abusers, thus minimizing the emotional distress associated with traditional court appearances. This technological adaptation not only aims to protect the mental well-being of victims but also seeks to streamline the judicial process for sexual violence cases, making it more accessible and less intimidating for those involved.
