How NURTW stopped suspected ritualist from sending baby’s corpse through courier
The Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers thwarted an attempt by a suspected ritualist to send a one-year-old baby's corpse through a courier service in Abuja.
The Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) reported a disturbing incident where an attempt was made to send the corpse of a one-year-old baby through a courier service to Gwagwalada, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory. Ibrahim Bako, the Area Coordinator of NURTW, shared this alarming account in an interview, emphasizing that this is not the first time the organization has encountered such a grim situation, having previously seized illegal substances like cocaine during courier operations.
Bako elaborated on the union members’ experiences with courier and logistics services, revealing that alongside the baby’s corpse, they also discovered other illegal items such as rifles being sent out. The swift action of the NURTW in reporting the incident not only highlights their vigilance in the transport industry but also points to a larger issue involving criminal activities in the guise of legitimate services. The union has been proactive in ensuring that dangerous contrabands are intercepted before they can reach their destinations.
This incident raises significant concerns about the safety and security within courier and logistics services in Nigeria. Such cases not only reflect the challenges faced by transport unions in monitoring their operations but also underscore the urgent need for government and law enforcement agencies to strengthen regulations and oversight in the courier sector to prevent the exploitation by criminals.
