Extensive VAR changes introduced in the World Cup

Extensive changes to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be implemented during the upcoming World Cup to accelerate the pace of the games.

As the World Cup approaches, significant changes to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system are set to be introduced, aiming to minimize time-wasting and enhance the flow of matches. The adjustments come as Norway's men's national team prepares for its first World Cup appearance since 1998, facing new officiating standards that differ from their prior experiences.

Key among the changes is the VAR's expanded role, which will now include interventions for incorrectly awarded corner kicks and the allocation of second yellow cards that lead to red cards. This move seeks to streamline decision-making, ensuring that crucial moments are addressed promptly and accurately, contributing to a more dynamic game environment.

Additionally, strict time regulations will be enforced on goal kicks, throw-ins, and substitutions, compelling players to act within designated time frames. For instance, players must vacate the pitch within ten seconds of being substituted, or else possession will pass to the opposing team. These measures reflect the organizers' commitment to improving the game’s tempo and ensuring an engaging viewing experience for fans throughout the tournament, which will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
