UMK hits viewer record

The Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK) has set a new viewer record with an average of 1.8 million viewers tuning in, according to Yle's report.

The Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK), Finland's new music competition, has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a viewer record, as reported by Yle. The finale aired on Saturday, drawing an average of 1.8 million viewers on television, with the broadcast reaching over 2.5 million Finns that evening. This marks a significant leap in audience engagement, surpassing previous viewership figures for the event.

In addition to the record-breaking viewer numbers, UMK also saw an increase in voting participation. According to Yle, the number of votes cast reached 446,681, exceeding last year's total by over 100,000 votes. This demonstrates not only the growing popularity of the competition but also a greater involvement from the audience, who had the option to vote for their favorites for free via the Yle app or through paid options like text messages and calls. The revenue from paid voting will be donated to the A-klinikkasäätiö and the Ensi- ja turvakotien liitto, emphasizing a charitable aspect to the event.

The final results of the competition were influenced by public votes, which accounted for 75% of the total, while the remaining 25% came from an international jury. The winners, Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen, triumphed with their song "Liekinheitin," adding their names to the growing legacy of UMK as a platform for emerging musical talent in Finland and potentially on a European stage as well.
