Two women fell victim to fraudsters in Vilnius, losing 12.5 thousand euros

Two women in Vilnius were targeted by fraudsters pretending to be tax inspectors, resulting in a total loss of 12.5 thousand euros.

The Vilnius County Police Headquarters reported that on Saturday, a 1943-born woman reported being scammed by unknown individuals posing as employees of the tax inspection service. On February 26, around 10 AM, these scammers managed to deceive her into transferring 5,000 euros. In another incident, on the same Friday at around 1 PM, a 1963-born woman also received a call from scammers, leading to a loss of 7.5 thousand euros.

The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into both cases of fraud. This incident highlights the continuing issue of scams targeting elderly individuals, who often fall prey to such deceitful tactics. The perpetrators exploit the trust of their victims by impersonating authority figures, which emphasizes the need for increased awareness and education about such scams, particularly among vulnerable demographics.

Authorities are urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls. It is crucial for individuals to verify the identity of those who claim to represent official entities before engaging in financial transactions, in order to protect themselves from similar situations in the future. The growing prevalence of fraud emphasizes the need for stronger measures to combat such crimes and safeguard the community.
