Fraudsters Posed as Tax Inspectors and Defrauded More than 29 Thousand Euros
Two pensioners in Vilnius were defrauded of over 29,000 euros by scammers posing as tax inspectors.
In an alarming case of fraud reported by the Police Department of Lithuania, two elderly women from Vilnius fell victim to impersonators posing as tax inspectors. An 87-year-old woman reported that she received a call from a man speaking Russian, who deceived her into handing over 18,000 euros, claiming to be a tax inspector. She was approached at her home by the scammer, who received the cash directly from her.
Additionally, a 75-year-old woman reported similar fraud where she received calls over five days from unknown individuals, also speaking Russian. These imposters introduced themselves as tax inspectors and representatives conducting electric meter repairs, tricking her into giving up more than 11,000 euros. The reported incidents showcase a troubling trend in targeted scams against vulnerable senior citizens, particularly those who may not be fluent in Lithuanian.
In response to these incidents, the Vilnius District Police initiated pre-trial investigations to track down the fraudsters. This highlights the ongoing issue of financial scams targeting the elderly and the need for increased vigilance and education about such criminal activities to protect vulnerable populations.
