No illegal migrants registered on the border with Belarus
Latvian border officers turned back eight illegal migrants attempting to cross the border, while Polish officials reported no illegal migrant activity in recent days.
According to reports, Latvian border guards turned back eight illegal migrants trying to cross the border over the weekend, while Polish authorities noted a lack of illegal migrant incidents on their side in the recent days. This reflects ongoing efforts among border countries to manage the flow of illegal migration, particularly from Belarus. In Lithuania, the last recorded attempt to cross the border illegally involved two migrants being denied entry last Thursday.
So far this year, Lithuania has seen a total of 37 illegal migrants denied entry, a significant reduction compared to previous years. In 2022, more than 1,600 attempts were made to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus, while in 2021, the number soared to over 1,000 attempts. The influx of migrants from Belarus began in earnest in 2021, with Western nations accusing the Minsk regime of facilitating this migration flow as a form of hybrid warfare against the EU.
The situation at the Belarus border continues to be a point of contention within the European Union, highlighting not only the challenges of border management but also the geopolitical tensions stemming from Belarus's actions. The reported decrease in illegal crossings may suggest an improvement in border security or a decrease in attempts to migrate, but the humanitarian implications of such migration flows remain a critical concern for policymakers in the region.
