Araraquara and São Carlos have an increase in cases of intentional bodily harm in January, says SSP

Araraquara and São Carlos recorded a rise in intentional bodily harm cases in January 2023, according to the São Paulo State Department of Public Safety.

In January 2023, the cities of Araraquara and São Carlos in São Paulo state experienced significant increases in cases of intentional bodily harm, with Araraquara reporting a 23% increase and São Carlos a 6% increase compared to January of the previous year. The total cases in Araraquara jumped from 76 to 94, highlighting a worrying trend in violent incidents within the community.

In addition to the rise in intentional bodily harm incidents, Araraquara also saw a notable increase in vehicle thefts, reflecting broader concerns regarding public safety in the area. The thefts rose from 20 cases in 2025 to 22 in 2026, indicating a 10% increase. Conversely, incidents of other types of theft decreased, with a 12% drop in occurrences from 256 to 226 recordings during the same timeframe, suggesting a complex criminal landscape where certain crimes are surging while others are declining.

These developments raise significant concerns for local authorities and the community at large, as increasing violence could lead to broader implications for public safety and law enforcement strategies. The findings by the State Department of Public Safety (SSP-SP) underscore the need for enhanced measures to address and mitigate these trends in Araraquara and São Carlos, as well as the importance of community engagement in finding solutions to prevent further escalation of violence and crime in these areas.
