Rains cause flooding in Belém and March is expected to have above-average rainfall
Belém has experienced persistent rain leading to significant flooding in various areas, with forecasts indicating an even wetter March.
Belém, Brazil, has been affected by ongoing rain that began early in the morning, leading to flooding in multiple parts of the city. The rain started around 2:30 AM and continued throughout the morning with varying intensity. Key areas like São Clemente in the Bengui neighborhood and Icoaraci were notably impacted, where buses had to navigate through flooded streets, causing considerable disruption for residents.
Meteorologist Everaldo Barreiros from the Federal University of Pará attributes the persistent rain to a combination of air currents that favor the formation of heavy cloud cover in the metropolitan region of Belém. This weather pattern has caused logistical challenges in everyday life for many residents who are facing accessibility issues due to the flooding.
Looking ahead, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has indicated that the heaviest rainfall period of the year is still forthcoming. March is predicted to see rainfall amounts exceeding those recorded in the previous three months, which could intensify the already challenging situation for Belém's residents as they deal with both immediate flooding concerns and the potential for more severe weather.
