Campinas-Monte Mor Highway reopens two days after being closed due to erosion during heavy rain

The Campinas-Monte Mor Highway has reopened after being closed for two days due to erosion caused by heavy rainfall.

The Campinas-Monte Mor Highway (SP-101) was reopened on Saturday, two days after it was closed due to severe erosion from heavy rainfall. The erosion created a significant hole at km 6.8 in Hortolândia, which led to various damages in the area. The local government reported that four houses were impacted, but none were evacuated and no displacements were recorded at this time. During the closure of the highway, the concessionaire Rodovias do Tietê noted that traffic was heavily affected, resulting in a 2-kilometer congestion during peak hours as drivers had to reroute. Additionally, the heavy rainfall caused six walls to collapse, one of which was in a school, along with eight flooding points in various areas, highlighting the extent of the storm's impact on local infrastructure. Residents and commuters in the region can now resume normal travel as the highway is once again open, but the temporary closure has raised concerns about road maintenance and urban planning to better withstand future weather events. Local authorities may need to invest further in infrastructure improvements to prevent similar occurrences during extreme weather conditions in the future.
