Finnish people recount attacks in Dubai and Doha – uncertain when they can leave
Finnish tourists in Dubai share their experiences of drone attacks and the ensuing chaos, leaving them unsure about their travel plans.
Johanna Stenros and her husband Jarkko, who were vacationing in Dubai, experienced a frightening incident during their stay when they heard multiple explosions near their hotel at Jumeirah West Beach. They described the initial sounds of blasts earlier that day, culminating in a powerful explosion while dining at the hotel restaurant. The couple was unsettled by the sight of black smoke and quickly sought information about the situation, relieved to find that safety measures were in place at their hotel.
Reports later confirmed that the explosions were linked to a drone attack which ignited a fire at the Fairmont The Palm hotel entrance. This incident took place during a complicated geopolitical situation, with debris from an Iranian missile strike reportedly causing the chaos in the area. News agencies like AFP reported that four individuals were injured and taken to the hospital following the incident, as Dubai's media office subsequently classified the event as a 'security incident.'
The situation has left many tourists, including Stenros, feeling anxious and questioning their ability to leave the UAE safely. Their accounts reflect broader concerns for travelers amidst rising tensions in the region, indicating that the ramifications of such events extend beyond immediate safety fears, potentially impacting tourism and diplomatic relations as well.
