Suplicy proposes bill for Bom Prato to serve free meals

State Deputy Eduardo Suplicy is presenting a bill to make meals at Bom Prato free for all residents of São Paulo.

Eduardo Suplicy, a state deputy from São Paulo, is set to introduce a new bill aiming to provide free meals at the Bom Prato restaurant network for all residents of the state. Currently, breakfast costs R$ 0.50 and lunch or dinner R$ 1, with the government already offering free meals to homeless individuals not in shelters and children under six years old. Suplicy views this proposed legislation as a significant step toward combating food insecurity in the region.

The need for such legislation arises from the challenges that many low-income individuals face in accessing affordable meals. According to Roseli Kraemer, a coordinator for the Forum in Defense of the Homeless Population, losing the card required for free meals is a common issue, and the process of obtaining a replacement is cumbersome and complicated. This creates an additional barrier for individuals who rely on these services, making Suplicy's initiative a timely response to alleviate their struggles.

By eliminating the cost of meals entirely, the proposed bill seeks to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and ensure that everyone, especially the most vulnerable populations, can access essential nutrition without additional stress. The proposal is expected to spark discussions around food policies and welfare in São Paulo, drawing attention to the broader issue of food security in urban environments.
