The Warmest Winter Day! 13 Degrees Celsius Recorded in Parts of Lithuania
Lithuania experiences a record-breaking warm day with temperatures reaching 13.5 degrees Celsius in VarÄ—na, the highest for February 28.
Preliminary data indicates that Lithuania has set a new record for the highest temperature on February 28, reaching an astounding 13.5 degrees Celsius in VarÄ—na. This temperature not only surpasses the previous record set exactly nine years ago in Druskininkai at 12.6 degrees Celsius but also highlights the warming trends being observed in recent years.
This is the first record of the highest air temperature recorded this year, with previous years showing a troubling trend of increasing temperature records. In 2025, there were a total of 23 such records, followed by 18 in 2024, 16 in 2023, 13 in 2022, and only 6 in 2021. The comparison indicates that heat records in Lithuania have been measured significantly more frequently over the past five years, occurring eight times more often than cold records.
Looking ahead, the weather forecast predicts that Sunday will also be unusually warm, with temperatures rising to between 3 to 8 degrees Celsius, and locally even reaching up to 10 degrees in some southern areas. However, forecasters note that the record temperature for March 1, which is 13.9 degrees Celsius set in Druskininkai in 2024, is expected to remain unchallenged this year.
