VIDEO: rains cause destruction in Piranhas and Delmiro Gouveia, in the Sertão of Alagoas

Heavy rains have caused significant destruction in the towns of Piranhas and Delmiro Gouveia in Alagoas, Brazil, but no injuries or displacements have been reported so far.

In the last 48 hours, the towns of Piranhas and Delmiro Gouveia in the Sertão region of Alagoas, Brazil, have experienced intense rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and damage. Local residents shared videos showing historic areas of Piranhas submerged in water and mud. The severe weather has raised concerns among the communities, although, fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or displacements at this time.

In Delmiro Gouveia, the situation worsened as a dam, which collects water from rivers in the nearby towns of Pariconha and Água Branca, began to overflow. The heavy rains caused significant destruction, including the displacement of multiple large pipes, highlighting the force of the floodwaters. Meteorologists have warned that the heavy rains are expected to continue until at least next Monday, raising the risk of further incidents in the region.

The severe weather conditions pose a potential hazard not only to the residents of the Sertão but also to nearby areas such as the Agreste, Baixo São Francisco, and Zona da Mata, where rainfall is predicted to intensify. Authorities are urging locals to remain vigilant as the flood risks remain high with the current forecast predicting up to 100 millimeters of rainfall, nearly double what was expected for this period of time.
