Highway collapses and is closed after heavy rains at the border of Sergipe and Alagoas
The AL-225 highway between Canindé de São Francisco and Piranhas was closed after heavy rainfall caused it to collapse, with emergency services assessing the situation.
The AL-225 highway, located near the bridge over the São Francisco River that marks the boundary between the municipalities of Canindé de São Francisco (SE) and Piranhas (AL), has completely collapsed due to severe rainfall that struck the region. This incident was reported by the Civil Defense of Canindé de São Francisco on Saturday. Footage released by the Civil Defense shows a large crater where the highway used to be, indicating significant damage and a disruption in vehicle traffic between the two municipalities. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.
In response to the disaster, the Civil Defense of the State of Sergipe has mobilized teams to the affected area to assess and manage the situation. Additionally, the local Fire Department is actively responding to the emergency. The heavy rains leading to the highway's collapse have also prompted the municipal government of Canindé de São Francisco to announce the postponement of school classes, affecting several local educational institutions.
This event underscores the impact of extreme weather on infrastructure and public services in Brazil, particularly in regions like Sergipe and Alagoas that may be vulnerable to such natural disasters. The immediate concern is the safety of residents as emergency services work to repair the damage and ensure the road is safe for future use.
