Avalanche at Ski Resort on the Niigata-Nagano Border, Four People Including a Child Hospitalized, All Conscious

An avalanche occurred at the Madarao Kogen Ski Resort affecting five individuals, four of whom were transported to the hospital but remained conscious.

On the afternoon of February 28, an avalanche struck the Madarao Kogen Ski Resort, which spans the borders of Myoko City in Niigata Prefecture and Iiyama City in Nagano Prefecture. Five people were caught up in the avalanche, four of whom, including a 14-year-old boy and a Japanese parent in their forties, were taken to a hospital in Nagano City complaining of pain in areas such as the ribs. Fortunately, all individuals involved were reported to be conscious and able to communicate.

The avalanche occurred shortly after 2 PM on a course known as the 'Powder Line,' which had not been freshly groomed. The representative of the ski area stated that this was the first avalanche incident he had encountered in his decades of involvement in the industry. The clients included not only local individuals but also a Taiwanese couple in their thirties and forties who were also affected by the avalanche, highlighting the resort's international appeal and the diverse visitor demographic.

Avalanches are known hazards in mountainous snow areas, and this incident underscores the importance of safety measures in skiing. It raises concerns regarding the conditions of ski courses and the training of personnel to manage emergency situations. Thankfully, the prompt response from the local police and ski area officials ensured that those injured received immediate medical attention, but it serves as a reminder for skiers and the industry to remain vigilant about avalanche risks and safety protocols during winter sports, especially in less controlled environments like the Powder Line.
