Avalanche in Madesimo overwhelms four snowmobilers: one is missing

An avalanche in the Valchiavenna mountains has trapped four snowmobilers, with one individual still missing as rescue efforts continue.

An avalanche occurred today in the mountainous area of Valchiavenna, specifically near Madesimo (Sondrio), where four snowmobilers, consisting of two couples, were caught in a snow slide. The alarm was raised shortly before 5:30 PM, prompting immediate rescue operations. Initial reports indicate that three of the snowmobilers were rescued, while efforts continue to locate the fourth individual who remains missing.

Quickly following the alarm, local authorities were alerted, including the Carabinieri of Chiavenna, and firefighters from the Mese station and the provincial command in Sondrio. The regional emergency response center, Soreu delle Alpi, activated the emergency protocol to coordinate the rescue operations. The search and recovery efforts are being led by the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps from the Madesimo station, alongside two helicopters that were dispatched from Sondrio and Brescia.

The area where the avalanche struck is notably rugged, complicating ongoing searches for the missing snowmobiler. As rescuers work tirelessly against time and adverse conditions, the incident highlights the dangers associated with winter sports in mountainous terrains and the importance of swift emergency response in avalanche situations.
