Maranhão State Finance Department audits ICMS credits and refunds R$ 3.5 billion in MA
The Maranhão State Finance Department is auditing ICMS credits declared by companies in the state, resulting in more than R$ 3.5 billion refunds due to inconsistencies.
The Maranhão State Finance Department (Sefaz-MA) is conducting a tax audit to verify accumulated ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) credits declared by companies across the state. This initiative is led by the Foreign Trade Audit Unit (Comex) with the goal of ensuring that the amounts reported in Digital Tax Records (EFD) are legally backed. This recent action reflects an increased focus on compliance and the proper management of tax credits within the state's economy.
In recent months, over R$ 3.5 billion in ICMS credits have been refunded as a result of this audit process. According to official reports, 35 companies have already remedied their situations after being notified by tax auditors about discrepancies and legal concerns in their tax declarations. The Finance Department emphasizes the critical nature of these audits, indicating that they are a necessary step for maintaining the integrity and proper functioning of the tax system in Maranhão.
Marcelo Queiroz, the manager of Comex, has stated that this ongoing work offers a final opportunity for voluntary regularization for the companies involved before stricter measures are implemented. Notifications are being sent to taxpayers who demonstrated inconsistencies in their tax filings or raised suspicions of irregularities, underlining the importance of transparency and regulatory compliance in tax matters within the state.
